sleep, certain medications, hormonal changes, skin conditions, nutritional deficiencies, and some neurological conditions.
Why Does It Sometimes Happen at Night?
Nighttime can make unusual sensations seem much more noticeable.
When you’re lying quietly in bed, there are fewer distractions. You may suddenly become aware of a tiny muscle twitch, a strand of hair brushing against your skin, movement from the bedsheet, or ordinary itching.
Stress and sleep deprivation can also make people more sensitive to bodily sensations. The more closely you concentrate on the feeling, the more alarming it can become.
This can create a frustrating cycle:
sensation → worry → increased attention → more stress → even stronger sensation.
But Don’t Assume Every Crawling Feeling Is Imaginary
It’s important not to dismiss the possibility of a genuine physical cause.
Check your bedding and mattress for signs of insects. Bed bugs, for example, may leave bites, blood spots, or dark marks around mattress seams.
