4. Enlarged Prostate
In men, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common cause of urinary symptoms as they age.
As the prostate becomes enlarged, it can partially obstruct the flow of urine.
Possible symptoms include:
- A weak urine stream
- Difficulty starting urination
- Dribbling
- A feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied
- Frequent urination during the day and night
BPH is not prostate cancer, but persistent urinary symptoms should still be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
5. Diabetes
Frequent urination can sometimes be an early sign of diabetes.
When blood glucose levels become too high, the kidneys work harder to remove excess glucose through the urine. This can increase urine production.
Other possible symptoms include:
- Increased thirst
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
If frequent nighttime urination occurs together with these symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended.
6. Urinary Tract Infection
A urinary tract infection (UTI) can also cause frequent urination.
Other symptoms may include:
- Burning or pain during urination
- A sudden or urgent need to urinate
- Lower abdominal discomfort
- Cloudy urine
- Strong-smelling urine
Although UTIs can cause symptoms throughout the day, they can also disturb sleep by increasing the need to urinate during the night.
7. Sleep Apnea
Many people do not realize that obstructive sleep apnea may contribute to nighttime urination.
