Add lime juice, salt, tomatoes, onions, or your favorite seasonings, and those unpleasant strands may disappear into the finished dish.
Blend It Into a Smoothie
A blender can also break up the fibrous texture.
This is an especially easy option if the avocado is perfectly usable but doesn’t have the smooth consistency you expected.
When Should You Throw an Avocado Away?
Not every unusual-looking avocado should be rescued.
There are several warning signs that deserve more attention.
Watch for Mold
If you see fuzzy white, green, or black mold, it’s best to discard the fruit rather than simply cutting around the affected area.
Soft fruits can allow mold to penetrate beyond what you can see.
Pay Attention to the Smell
A fresh avocado usually has a mild smell.
If it smells sour, rancid, fermented, or otherwise unpleasant, don’t take chances. Discard it.
Be Careful With Extensive Dark Discoloration
A small brown area doesn’t necessarily mean the entire avocado is spoiled. Bruising and oxidation can cause localized discoloration.
But if the flesh is extensively dark, mushy, watery, or appears to be breaking down, the avocado may have gone too far.
When in doubt, it’s safer to throw it away.
What About Brown Avocado Flesh?
Brown doesn’t automatically mean rotten.
